The Scholarships Are Out There. The Challenge Is Finding Them.
For many families, the cost of higher education can feel overwhelming. Tuition is only one part of the equation. Books, housing, transportation, meals, and other expenses can quickly add up.
But there is also a side of the college financing conversation that families do not always hear enough about: there are programs specifically designed to help students pay for college, and many families may not know they qualify.
In Georgia alone, the HOPE program has provided more than $16 billion in financial assistance to more than 2.2 million students since it began in 1993.
Federal aid can also make a significant difference. For the 2026 to 2027 academic year, the maximum Federal Pell Grant is $7,395, and eligible students can use Pell Grant funds at qualifying 2 year colleges, trade schools, and 4 year universities.
The challenge is making sure families know these opportunities exist and understand how to pursue them.
At Georgia Future Leaders, we wanted to help close that information gap.

Turning Information Into Opportunity
We invited parents and families from our community to learn about scholarships, financial aid, grants, and other resources that can help students pursue higher education.
We brought in experts who could explain the process, answer questions, and help families understand what opportunities may be available to their children. The goal was not simply to talk about college. It was to give parents practical information they could take home and use.
Georgia students have several state programs available through the Georgia Student Finance Commission. HOPE Scholarship, for example, is available to eligible Georgia residents who meet academic requirements, while HOPE Grant can help students pursuing certificates or diplomas. Zell Miller Scholarship provides another option for students who meet its higher academic requirements.
And Georgia is only part of the picture.
Students can also explore federal financial aid through the FAFSA, private scholarships, scholarships offered directly by colleges, and programs designed for students from particular backgrounds, communities, or fields of study.
For families looking for additional resources, organizations such as UNCF offer scholarship opportunities specifically for minority students. UNCF reports that it awards more than $62 million in scholarships each year and has helped more than 550,000 students earn college degrees.

Know What’s Available. Then Go After It.
Sometimes the biggest barrier is not that an opportunity does not exist. It is that a family does not know where to find it.
That is why community education matters.
Parents can start by exploring these resources:
- Georgia Student Finance Commission: HOPE and Zell Miller Programs
- Georgia Student Finance Commission: Scholarships, Grants and Loans
- Federal Student Aid: Pell Grants
- UNCF Scholarship Opportunities
Each program has its own eligibility requirements, deadlines, and application process, so families should review the current requirements directly before applying.
At Georgia Future Leaders, we believe that investing in children means more than providing resources today. It means helping families discover opportunities that can shape their children’s futures.
Our goal is to make sure families in our community know what is out there, understand how to take advantage of it, and feel empowered to pursue every opportunity available to their children.
If you’d like to support Georgia Future Leaders, your donation can help us continue bringing educational resources, experts, and opportunities directly to families in our community. We would love your support and greatly appreciate a donation to help us continue investing in our children and our next generation.
